About Grand Theft ArmA

The story behind one of ArmA 3's longest-running roleplay communities.

Grand Theft ArmA is one of Arma 3’s longest-running roleplay communities. Founded on 26 July 2014 under the name Grand Theft Altis, what started as a group of friends with a shared idea grew into a server ranked #1 across all ArmA III servers worldwide.

Powered by Arma 3’s military-grade sandbox, GTA was built entirely from scratch — no off-the-shelf life server here. Every feature, from the custom economy and faction tools to conflict zones and the web-based admin panel, was designed and built in-house by a volunteer team.

After eight years on Altis, the community entered hibernation in September 2023 to build REIMAGINE from the ground up. On 6 March 2026 the wait ended — REIMAGINE launched, delivering the greatest content release in GTA’s history and opening a brand-new chapter.

What We Stand For

Built From Scratch

Every system — economy, vehicles, factions, conflict zones, the web admin panel — was designed and coded in-house. No off-the-shelf life server, no shortcuts. Over nine years of Altis Life, the framework was rebuilt and refined continuously to stay ahead of every other community.

A Living World

From Kavala's redesigned square to custom shipwrecks, CCTV systems, and property ownership — the world of GTA was crafted to reward curiosity. Seasonal events, treasure hunts, faction rivalries, and player-driven economies made every session feel alive.

Here for the Long Haul

GTA ran continuously for over eight years — through DDoS attacks, game engine changes, server migrations, and the natural decline of ArmA 3. Every time the community faced a challenge, it came out the other side.

Volunteer-Powered

Every developer, moderator, wiki editor, and helper has been a volunteer. The staff team is recruited from within the player base, the wiki is maintained by the community, and the events team has produced some of the most creative scenarios ever seen on an Altis Life server.

Our Journey

  1. 26 Jul 2014

    The Beginning

Lakotiz, Stuffz, Daedalus, Gallioni, and c0d0n launched "Grand Theft Altis" — an Altis Life community built on the idea of doing something unique. The website and TeamSpeak went live the very first night. Early days were rough, but the founders kept pushing.

  2. Sep 2014

    DnA Joins

A developer named DnA appeared in TeamSpeak asking if the team needed help. What followed was transformative — he built the perks & levelling system, overhauled server optimisation, introduced the NATO faction, and eventually became Lead Developer and co-owner. Everything unique about GTA traces back to him.

  3. 2015

    #1 in the World

One year in, GTA was ranked #1 across all ArmA III servers worldwide. The website was completely rebuilt with a new dark theme on IPBoard 4, and a brand-new logo was unveiled to match. The server regularly hit 50–60 concurrent players — numbers the founders never imagined when they started.

  4. 2016

    Three Servers & Tanoa

A third server launched to handle demand, supporting up to 130 balanced players across the fleet. A Tanoa Life server briefly opened following the Bohemia Apex expansion before players migrated back to Altis. Seasonal events — Halloween ghost hunts, snow on Altis, and a New Year’s party — became community tradition.

  5. 2017

    Custom Everything

Kavala Square was completely redesigned from the ground up. The community wiki launched to ease new-player onboarding. New in-game systems shipped: a full property system, CCTV cameras, warrant system, shipwrecks, streamlined GUIs, and 64-bit ArmA support. Forum-to-game account integration automated faction tags across the board.

  6. 2018

    Quarter Million Players

GTA surpassed 250,000 unique players and permanently banned over 20,000 cheaters along the way. The Membership system replaced ad-hoc donations, securing the server’s financial future. A dedicated Conflict Zone server launched — tied to Life player accounts — and immediately became one of the most popular offerings.

  7. 2019

    Five Years Running

Half a decade in operation. The fifth anniversary was celebrated with the annual in-game auction and treasure hunt, continuing traditions the community had come to love year after year.

  8. 2020

    300,000 Players & 180 Slots

The Altis Life server expanded to 180 player slots while achieving the best server performance figures ever recorded — higher FPS at 180 players than the old setup managed at 130. Over 300,000 unique players had joined, with 1,000,000+ forum posts and 54,000+ registrations to mark the occasion.

  9. 2021

    14 Conflict Maps

The Conflict server grew to 14 unique maps, drawing players from communities across the ArmA ecosystem. The community wiki was overhauled to set a new standard for Altis Life documentation. 346,000+ players had passed through, with an active events team producing some of the most creative scenarios the game had seen.

  10. 2022

    Eight Years Strong

DnA shipped a custom tool letting community members build their own Conflict Zones with dynamic spawns and vendors. A brand-new in-game chat system replaced the old one that had been running for years. Player count hit 379,000 across 67,500 forum accounts. ArmA Reforger arrived, teasing the Enfusion Engine — and GTA started planning its future on ArmA 4.

  11. 17 Sep 2023

    Hibernation

After almost nine incredible years, GTA entered hibernation to pour every resource into REIMAGINE — a ground-up rebuild of the entire experience. Servers and services shut down.

  12. 6 Mar 2026

    REIMAGINE Launches

The wait was over. REIMAGINE launched with a brand-new map, a rebuilt game framework, a fresh staff team, and new faction leaders — delivering the greatest content release in GTA’s history. A reset economy, welcomed returning players into a new era of Grand Theft ArmA.

  13. Now

    Your Chapter

Every session played, every deal struck, every faction built — it’s all yours. The history above was written by the people who showed up. Now’s your turn.
